Both teams needed late goals to get by their semifinal opponents. The USA needed a strike by Gyasi Zardes to overcome Asian champions Qatar, a special guest team from Asia, in the first semifinal played in Austin, Tex. Mexico scored its winner deep in stoppage time with Hector Herrera lifting his team to a 2-1 win.
Mexico is still on track to defend its 2019 Gold Cup title, and the U.S. men’s national team was always expected to challenge El Tri for the title. The two countries have split the last 10 editions of the Gold Cup tournament.
