As was previously reported, it appears that Nintendo will be cranking out silver and gold renditions of the imminent Mario Party 10 line of Super Mario amiibo, and it looks as if these different colors will be retailer exclusives – with the Gold Mario amiibo being made available only through Walmart. This supposed business arrangement between Ninty and Walmart was first discovered by Reddit user ‘pituvision’ after the individual snapped a picture of what appears to be a poster advertising the retailer-exclusive.
This isn’t the first time that amiibo have been limited to a handful of select retailers (Lucario, Rosalina, Meta Knight and Shulk were all exclusives), but this is the first ever variant option that’ll seems to be making its way to stores. This could set up a terrifying scenario for collector’s and diehard fans that have already been struggling to secure their favorite amiibo as a result of resellers. That said, a Gold Mario could end up being a prized addition to anyone’s shelf.
There’s still no word on whether or not the gold variant of the Mario amiibo is indeed coming to Walmart or if it’s just an elaborate prank (something that Rayman and Smash Bros. fans know all to well), but chances are that Nintendo will will be addressing plans for more retailer-exclusive amiibo and forthcoming variants in the very near future.
Mario Party 10 is set to arrive exclusively on the Wii U on March 12, 2015.
