The video was posted to TikTok by @hdbrosriley—a page dedicated to chronicling the life of Riley the golden retriever—who wrote: “Three weeks of being a big brother!” It has amassed a whopping 31 million views and over 23,000 comments from charmed viewers calling Riley the “best big brother ever.” You can watch the full video here.
For some, Riley’s behavior may not be too shocking. Mary R. Burch, Ph.D., director of the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) family dog program and a certified animal behaviorist, told Newsweek that golden retrievers “are known to be good with children.”
“They are outgoing, trustworthy and eager-to-please family dogs,” Burch said. “Golden retrievers, and many other breeds, can form strong bonds with babies if they have spent a lot of time with them, and it has been a positive experience.”
Riley the Golden Retriever
Based on @hdbrosriley’s video—a supercut of various clips filmed around the dog’s owners’ house—Riley already appears to be forming a strong bond with his “baby brother.” In one clip, the dog rests his head on his brother’s lap as he bounces in his infant bouncer. In another, Riley showers the baby with kisses as he sleeps on his mom’s lap.
And at several points in the video, Riley lays beside and watches the newborn as he sleeps in his crib or does tummy time on his play mat.
“Dogs sometimes become protective of babies,” Burch told Newsweek. “This is often attributed to instinct. There is a tendency for adult dogs to protect puppies (and humans) who are perceived as weaker and in need of protection.”

Funnily enough, this isn’t the first time Riley has gone viral.
A video that shows him meeting his baby brother for the first time went viral in October, as did a clip that shows him sitting beside his owner and the baby with a “jealous” look on his face.
And in January, commenters were charmed by a video montage showing Riley jumping into his owner’s arms.
