In the video, which can be seen here, the voice over describes how he has deployed his “special anchor” over his mom’s “audacity to think we would go on a ‘street walk’ and not visit the park.”
The video, which has been viewed over 325,000 times, is one of many of the goofy pup on the TikTok page Elton The Golden Retriever, which has over 24 million likes.
In other videos, Elton can be seen giving great side eye, stealing socks, snuggling and generally doing what golden retrievers do.
The American Kennel Club posted an article on its website, entitled “10 Things Only Golden Retriever Owners Understand,” explaining the several reasons why golden retrievers are a popular breed. The reasons include:
Goldens are easily trainable and they love to please. But, they’ll also train you as well. If you’re not paying enough attention to them, they’ll remind you that you can do whatever you’re doing while also petting them. If you own a golden, you know play time is all the time. You also know that it doesn’t matter who you are, your dog will play with them. Puppies, kids, other dogs, goldens are lovers. And because they are lovers. . . they often want to be as close to you as possible. Which means, unless you make that clear, the couch is not off limits. Snuggle sessions all the time. Goldens make the best pillows. They’re unbelievably friendly and just want to spend quality time with their family members. It’s a good thing they love to cuddle. You could be gone 20 minutes or the whole day. Either way, you know you’re coming home to golden smiles.
Many users shared their own golden retriever experiences in the comments, with one user writing: “Haha my golden Quincy does this and chomps his leash! I call it ‘a golden retriever protest!’”
Another commented: “My golden does this, either have to wait him out which can be 20+mins or act really excited to try and get him moving.”
Many users were familiar with the concept of “anchoring,” where a dog glues itself to the ground and refuses to move.
One user wrote: “I’ve literally learned about anchoring this week!” Another commented: “‘The Special Anchor’ why does my chocolate Labrador have the same anchor?”
And another user wrote: “I do this when mom & dad try to whizz me around the block!! More fool them I dig my anchors in so deep or lay flat out on the floor!!!”
