As seen in the trailer below, GoldenEye: Source 5.0 is far from simple rehash of the N64 game, as it is a total conversion modification of the title on Valve’s Source engine, which brings honed gameplay, high definition graphics, as well as a refined multiplayer arena experience. For instance, it includes 25 separate maps—including fan-favorite stages like Dam, Bunker, and Temple—10 different game modes, and all 28 weapons from the first iteration of GoldenEye 007.

What’s more is that GoldenEye: Source 5.0 doesn’t just re-imagine the original N64 title’s gameplay, but it also has a completely new soundtrack as well. As it happens, the musicians and computer based producers known as GoldenZen and Tweaklab have provided primary tracks for the game, with each containing a fresh spectrum of sound by revitalizing the music of GoldenEye 007 with the use of elements from its score and building new compositions around them.
One of the only drawbacks to be found within GoldenEye: Source 5.0 is its lack of a single-player campaign. However, taking into consideration all of the fine work that’s been done to provide fans with a free game full of reimagined weapon designs, gameplay tweaks, achievements to work toward, and so much more, it’s hard to imagine players even being worried that a solo mode is missing. Should all of this come off as enticing, GoldenEye: Source 5.0 just dropped today, and fans can get it from ModDB right here for free.
Naturally, with GoldenEye 007 being one of the most revered and beloved games in the history of the medium, the Nintendo 64 title has received its fair share of remakes, re-imaginings, and fan-made content that pay homage to the shooter. For instance, somewhat similar to the purpose of GoldenEye: Source, one budding game designer decided to make a recreation of the game’s “Facility” level with Unreal Engine 4, but unfortunately, it was only a model and wasn’t playable. Then there was the fan who gave the game a tribute with a mod putting the “Dam” level in the first Doom.
Taking all of these great fan-made projects honoring GoldenEye 007 into consideration, it’s a wonder that the game hasn’t received a decent follow-up since its release back in 1997. While GoldenEye: Source 5.0 is a solid project in and of itself, it’s safe to say that a lot of gaming fans are of the opinion that the world deserves a proper sequel to the original.
GoldenEye 007 can be played on the Nintendo 64, and the GoldenEye 007: Source 5.0 mod is out now for PC.
