The incident occurred in the Highland Cross area of north Harris County, Texas, during the early morning hours of Tuesday. An unnamed man, 22, for reasons that have yet to be determined, opened fire on his 58-year-old mother at point-blank range, leaving her with multiple gunshot wounds.

Neighbors told ABC 13 News that something might have gone wrong between the two at a Fourth of July cookout earlier in the night, noting that the son at one point began acting strangely. The two returned to the mother’s apartment unit, where investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office believe they got into a physical dispute, leaving her bleeding from wounds to the face.

At around 12:45 a.m., shots were heard coming from the apartment as the son allegedly began shooting his mother. She attempted to flee the unit, getting the attention of an unnamed neighbor who went to fetch his own gun. At this stage, investigators believe the son and the neighbor allegedly exchanged fire, but no one was hit.

Eventually, the son found his mother hiding behind a tree and allegedly shot her multiple times. At this point, the neighbor caught up to the son, finally shooting and killing him. Harris County Sheriff’s deputies found two weapons near the body, a pistol and a semi-automatic rifle.

The mother was taken from the scene to a hospital to treat her multiple gunshot wounds, with deputies applying two tourniquets to her before she was taken from the scene. Following surgery, she expected to make a recovery, ABC 13 reported. There had also been a 16-year-old in a nearby unit when the shooting began, but they did not sustain any injuries.

“The way the suspect was just firing indiscriminately, just point-blank shot the mother apparently as he stood over her, was a dangerous individual that likely could have continued shooting,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement. “He was already shooting. He damaged not only his apartment but the neighbors. The neighbors are shaken up because a 16-year-old daughter was sitting at the table where the shots rang out into the main living area. Another apartment was also shot up. Thankfully, that owner, we’re told, was away from the apartment at the time.”

Gonzalez said that the case will now be turned over to a grand jury, which will decide whether any charges will be leveled against the neighbor.

Good Samaritan laws in Texas typically offer legal protection for bystanders who try to administer aid to injured individuals, in the event that they accidentally cause further damage. It is unclear if or how the state’s laws will apply to the neighbor’s case.

Another shooting in Texas during the holiday weekend left three police officers and one civilian injured in Halthom City, according to the city’s police department. Police said the officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect later died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
